The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit working to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. Our scientists and engineers develop and implement innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.
The Union of Concerned Scientists is looking for an internship in media relations. This opportunity will provide participants with media experience working on exciting communication strategies at a leading national advocacy organization. The Media Intern will work with UCS scientists, analysts, and advocacy staff on strategies to promote and amplify the organization’s research and priorities in local and national outlets: print, television, radio, and online media.
- Monitoring science and policy news coverage
- Identifying opportunities for our scientists to participate in high-profile conversations, and influence narratives around certain issues
- Building and maintaining a variety of media contact lists
- Providing the media team with operational support
- Researching various topics to support media activities
- Pitching editors and reporters with story ideas
- Scheduling television appearances and radio interviews
- Assisting with event publicity, media training, and public relations logistics
- Drafting press releases and pitch memos
- Helping develop media strategies for our issue areas
- Answering the media line and directing reporter calls to the right experts
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent organizational skills, an understanding of (or an eagerness to learn) what makes a topic newsworthy, attention to detail, strong oral and written communication skills, and proficiency with computers. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Also needed are excellent interpersonal relations skills, as well as an ability to work both independently and in teams. Interest in science, the environment, or media issues is a plus.
May spend extended periods at a computer and keyboard. Travel 0-3 times a year.
At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours, and Location: This is a full-time one-year internship based in UCS’s DC office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is $36,400.
